The first song in my playlist is “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance. This song matches the scene in Blood Wounds by Susan Beth Pfeffer, when Willa is in her father’s house and Trace breaks in. They fit because the song explains how “Teenagers scare the living s***” out of this person, and in the book, Trace and Willa got really scared when Trace broke in. The song also goes into detail about how complicated a teenager’s life can be and Willa’s life seems to be very difficult.
The second song I chose was “Home” by Phillip Phillips. This song matches the book because Willa’s mom left her dad when Willa was young. She married a man named Jack who is trying to “make that place her home.” The song also has a happy mood and tone which matches how hard Jack is trying for all of them to be a happy family.
The third song I chose was “Little Talks” by Of Monsters And Men. This song matches the book because in the song it says, “Don’t listen to a word I say, the screams all sound the same.” This explains how Willa is feeling, because she’s not really paying attention to anything around her. Also, a lot of people are being rude about her dad, when she goes to Pryor for a funeral, and she tries to just ignore what they say.
The fourth song I chose was “Build God, Then We’ll Talk” by Panic! At The Disco. I picked this song because in the song it says “Raindrops and roses, and girls in white dresses and sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses. At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains, and a few more of your least favorite things.” That is a play on words from The Sound Of Music reflecting on how early in life, people expect everything to be great and amazing but then people end up in these terrible situations. Willa, when she first found out that her father had killed those people, didn’t know what to think. She had experienced the same kind of disappointment in that situation.
The fifth song I chose was “You’re Never Over” by Eminem. I think this song fits because in the song, Eminem is talking about how when his best friend Proof died, he stayed strong and didn’t give up. In the book, when Willa goes to Pryor, where her father lived, she keeps remembering little things about him and she realizes that she has to stay strong and not let what he did affect her.
The sixth song I chose was “Cancer” by My Chemical Romance. I picked this song because the mood and tone of the song seem to match the book, and in the song it says, “Turn away, ‘cause I’m awful just to see.” This explains how Willa is feeling because ever since her dad was on the news, people have been giving her dirty looks and she’s ashamed of what he did.
The seventh song I chose was “Yesterday” by The Beatles. I think this song goes well with this book, because in the song it says, “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.” This is sort of saying that the day before, life was simple and now it’s all complicated. In the book, Willa’s life pretty much seems to flip upside- down overnight. Even though her life was a little difficult before, after what happened there’s way more that Willa has to deal with.
The last song I chose was “Don’t Wake Me Up” by Avicii. In this song it says, “They say I’m too young to understand. They say I’m caught up in a dream.” This goes with the book because everyone thinks that Willa can’t handle much because she’s young but she actually understands most of what’s going on in her life pretty well. People shouldn’t judge someone by something they can’t help- like their age, but by their thoughts and opinions.
