The first song in my playlist is “Please Remember me” by Time McGraw. This song, describes a part in The Forest of Hands and Teeth when Mary’s Mother is dying and she keeps telling Mary to remember her and all of her stories, right before she dies. The tone in this scene is gloomy.
Next in my playlist, is the song “I hate everything about you” by Three Days Grace (Clean). When Mary is told by her brother Jed she will join the Sisterhood, I feel this song describes the scene well, due to the harsh feelings behind the lyrics, and how Mary is feeling towards her brother at that moment. I also feel like it captures the bitter tone to the scene.
Another song in my playlist is “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift. This song fits well with the scene in The Forest of Hands and Teeth when Mary has to go in to the tunnel before joining the Sisterhood, and she realizes her feelings for Travis while being surrounded by the Unconsecrated. It has a very melancholy tone.
The forth song in my playlist is “Not Afraid” by Eminem (Clean). Mary is a young girl who doesn’t like to not have answers to her questions. She rebels against this by doing anything she can to find out more about the forest of hands and teeth. The lyrics of this song fit her personality well. The cynical tone to the scene in the books, and lyrics fit very well together.
Next in my playlist is the song “I will always love you” by Whitney Houston. I feel when Travis tells Mary how dangerous seeing the ocean will be for her, and how she needs to go taste the salt for him. He also tells her how much he truly loves her right before dying. I feel this song describes their feelings for each other at that point in time. This tone I feel is rather tragic or despairing.
The sixth song in my playlist is “Only Hope” by Mandy Moore. I feel this song describes how weighed down and how badly Mary wanted to just give up, as she was telling Jed the only thing that was keeping her going was her promise to Travis, Her promise to find the ocean. Her tone towards her situation is aspiring, or optimistic.
Next in my playlist is the song is “I’m a Survivor” by Gloria Gaynor. This song doesn’t fit the depressing tone the scene in the book has, but the lyrics fit well. This song fits when Mary and her group are all wondering in the forest and don’t have food or water, and how they must survive.
The final song in my playlist is “I’m coming Home” by Dirty Money feat. Skylar Grey (Clean) This song fits the scene in the book, where Mary finally reaches the ocean and follows her dream to see the ocean. The tone at this part of the book is relief, and accomplishment, but it is also remorseful and isolated
