Rascal Flatts- ‘Why’
“Why” by Rascal Flatts connects with the scene where Willa is at the funeral of her half-sisters who were murdered by their father. Willa realized after the murders that she had a family she’d never get a chance to meet. During this time she is thinking, “Why? Why did my father do this?”
Demi Lovato- ‘For the Love of a Daughter’
The song “For the love of a daughter” by Demi Lovato matches the scene when Willa is talking about how she feels about Budge and compares him to her step father Jack. She thinks about how different life would be like if she still lived in Pryor, TX with Budge. She wonders where her loyalties lie.
Rascal Flatts- ‘What Hurts the Most’
“What hurts the most” by Rascal Flatts is the song that I think represents the tone of the whole book. The song talks about the emotional pain of death. The book is all about not knowing how to deal with the pain. Willa has been hurt, and she didn’t know how to express her feelings so she used razors to cut herself. In the lyrics it states “What hurts the most, was being so close and having so much to say and watching you walk away and never knowing what could have been…”
Phillip Phillips- ‘Home’
“Home” by Phillip Phillips represents the part in the book when Willa is talking about how the razors help her through the painful times because she was too scared to count on her family. Willa wanted a family that accepted her but because she was too afraid to talk to them she turned to something she knew would be there without rejecting her. The lyrics state, “Hold on, to me as we go. As we roll down this unfamiliar road. And although this wave is stringing us along. Just know you’re not alone. Because I’m going to make this place your home. Settle down, it’ll all be clear. Don’t pay a mind to the demons. They fill you with fear. The trouble it might drag you down. If you get lost, you can always be found…”
Keith Urban-‘Tonight I Wanna Cry’
“Tonight I Wanna Cry” by Keith Urban describes the scene when Willa breaks down at the funeral. She loses control and nothing can stop her. She feels like she can’t control herself, and in the song it says “I have never been the kind to ever let my feelings show, I thought that being tough was never losing self control… to h*ll with my pride let it fall like rain.”
The Band Perry ‘If I Die Young’
“If I Die Young” by The Band Perry represents the fact that Willa tried to kill herself and thinks about it multiple times. She wanted to kill herself in the same manner her half-sisters were murdered. She wanted to end her pain, until she realized she didn’t want her life to end tragically the way theirs did.
Daniel Powter-‘Bad Day’
“Bad Day” by Daniel Powter is the song I imagine is playing trough Willa’s head as she tip toes down to the basement. Willa goes down to the basement where the razors and the bandages are hidden. When she has a bad day she cuts herself with the razors instead of talking to her family.
Avicii-‘Wake Me Up’
“Wake Me Up” by Avicii is the song I picked to represent what Willa feels in the beginning of the book. Willa tells herself the murders were all a dream, and she just wants to wake up from the fact that her dad is a killer. She wants to forget the fact that her half-sisters were killed in cold blood. She just wants someone to “wake her up when its all over,” but she is living a nightmare.
