The first song in my playlist is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. This song fits the feeling of the beginning of the book Blood Wounds, where she feels like the outsider in her family, and is secretly suffering but doesn’t want to hurt anyone by showing it. This song is seemingly happy, but has an undertone of sadness. You also find out that she cuts on the beginning of the book, which matches the line of the song that says “you bleed just to know you’re alive”.

The second song in my playlist is Numb by Linkin Park. This song talks about not feeling good enough, or meeting up to others expectations, while always having to pretend to be someone you’re not. “I'm tired of being what you want me to be, feeling so faithless, lost under the surface. Don't know what you're expecting of me; put under the pressure of walking in your shoes.” This is how Willa feels about her family, because her stepsisters are seemingly perfect at everything, and can do so much more than her. Jack wants their family to be happy, and her mom wants to please Jack, so Willa has to play along. “And I know I may end up failing too. But I know you were just like me with someone disappointed in you.” These lyrics describe how Willa feels about her mom when she goes back to Pryor and discovers a lot of things about her and her mother’s past.

The third song in my playlist is London Bridge by Ed Sheeran ft. Yelawolf. This song fits the part in the end of Blood Wounds when Willa goes to the basement and begins to have suicidal thoughts. She sees the story of the murders from her Dad’s point of view, and understands his feelings. This song fits how she interprets her dad’s feelings. The lyrics in the song “whiskey on my mind, then came the dead, sheriff in the yard, here comes the rest”, “wanted to change but somehow I know I really wont” and “maybe I love blood- I just let it spill” all fit the situation that Willa’s dad was in. The song also talks about the man’s wife leaving him with the baby, which is what happened with Willa’s mom.

The fourth song in my playlist is Runaway by Bon Jovi. This song reminds me of the part in the book Blood Wounds where Willa is going to Pryor after the murders. She isn’t running away from home, but she is in a sense running away from her problems at home to go confront the problems she has with her past. She runs away from her family at home to discover the family she never knew she had. The pre chorus of the song runaway says “No one heard a single word you said. They should have seen it in your eyes what was going around your head”. This makes me think of the way no one in Willa’s family saw what she was going through until it was almost too late.

The fifth song in my playlist is Demons by Imagine Dragons. This song goes with a specific quote on page 155 of Blood Wounds: “I knew about his battles with his demons”. This is a line from Pastor Hendrick’s speech at the funeral. The lyrics from the chorus “Don’t get too close it’s dark inside, it’s where my demons hide” say the same thing as the Pastor had been saying about Dwayne Coffey.

The sixth song in my playlist is On My Own by Three Days Grace. The lyrics from this song “I walk alone; think of home, memories of long ago. No one knows I lost my soul long ago,” makes me think of how Willa was feeling when she was in Pryor, away from home and seeing the horrors of her past. Her life before the murders probably seemed like a long time ago, and the past Willa like another person. “So now I'm standing here alone, I'm learning how to live life on my own. Forget about the past I'll never know; forget about the one I left at home.” These last lyrics of the song also tie into the story, and make me think of when she visited the graves of her family in the cemetery.

The seventh song in my playlist is Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran. This song fits the mood and tone of extreme depression in Blood Wounds when Willa holds the blade to her neck, thinking how easy it would be to let her “blood flow away, taking my life along with it”. The bridge of the song where Ed Sheeran is screaming the words ‘Love me! Give me love!’ fits the call for help Willa is feeling when she’s at her breaking point.

The final song in my playlist is Life Starts Now by Three Days Grace. This song makes me think of the end of the book Blood Wounds. It is somewhat upbeat, like the ending of the book, and it’s about moving on and starting over, like Willa has to do after her family moves past the tragedy and solves their problems. The lyrics “life starts now; you've done all the things that could kill you somehow” describe Willa’s past and hope for the future. The words “All this pain, take this life and make it yours. All this hate, take your heart and let it love again” also describe the closure of Willa’s past, and her commitment to stop cutting for good.
