These are the songs that I choose for the book Legend by Marie Lu.
The first song in my playlist is “Man of constant sorrow” by Soggy Bottom Boys. This song matches the scene in Legend when Day acts like he has been stabbed and on his way to the hospital. He was going to the hospital because he needed to get a plague vaccine for his little brother. These two fit together because the book says how Day has done bad things, but to protect his family. The speakers tone in the song is that he has done bad things in his past and cannot return home, but he still hopes that he can go to heaven when he dies. The tone for this part of the book is that Day feels nervous about entering the hospital for the fear of being caught.
The second song in my playlist is “Spybreak!” by Propeller Heads. This song has no lyrics. This song matches the scene in Legend when June sneaks out of the collage she attends and scales a very large building. These two go together because they it has the element of action in the song and in the book. There are no speakers in song because there are no lyrics, but there is still tone in the song. The tone for the song is that it is somewhat upbeat and energetic. The tone for the scene in the book is perilous and griping because June is scaling a building at a very fast pace.
The third song in my playlist is “Saturday in the park” by Chicago. The song matches the scene in Legend when Day, June, and Tess are out for the day walking the streets of L.A. and searching the booths for merchandise. These two fit together because the song is sarcastic and in the novel, L.A. is a dirty, crime ridden city. The tone of the speaker is that he is enjoying his day at the park and is care free, this is almost the opposite for June and Day’s case. Their tone is that they need to lay low because Day is a wanted criminal.
The forth song in my playlist is “New car smell” by Michael Giachino. This song has no lyrics. This song matches the scene in Legend when June is told that her brother is killed, and when she is being driven to the police station to identify the body that was brought in. These two fit together because the song has sadness to it and so does the scene because June was not ready to say good bye to her brother. This song is from the 2009 Star Trek movie Spocks’ home world of Vulcan is destroyed. The tone that the speaker is expressing is the loss of something that you held dearly too.
The fifth song in my playlist is “The unforgiven” by Metalica. The song matches the scene in Legend when Day is being lead to the firing squad that will execute him. The two fit together because the song talks about how a boy is being punished for something that he did wrong. In Legend, Day was about to be executed for crimes against the Republic. The speaker tone was that he felt terrible that this boy was being punished for a crime.
These are my songs for the book Legend. I hope that you check out the book someday and enjoy it as much as I did.
