The first song in my playlist is “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus. I chose this song because even though people were shot and people died at Garvin High School they didn’t stop from trying to move on with their lives and forget what had happen. I mean I know they’re never going to forget that some of their peers died and some of them just got injured but they can I least try and forget or maybe not forget but try and move on from that terrible moment that happened May 2nd 2008. The tone in the scene is calm but towards the end it starts to get more intense. It matches the song because the song starts out very calm and gets intense towards the end, just like the scene that I picked out.
The second song in my playlist is “Miss Movin’ On” by Fifth Harmony. I chose this song because people were saying that Valerie told Nick to shoot the kids at their school, but she knew that she didn’t and tried to ignore them and move on, and she definitely became a different person after the shooting. She became more social and independent. She also became more trust worthy of her mother. The tone to this scene is progressive because she was trying to give herself a better life not just for her but for her mother, father, brother, and everybody who was there when the shooting happened.
The third song in my playlist is “When I was your Man” by Bruno Mars. I chose this song because when Nick killed himself after he shot a lot of high school student and teachers, Valerie kept thinking about him even though nick shot her in the leg, and she kept having flashbacks about all they’re memories together. The tone in this scene is struck because Valerie couldn’t believe that Nick shot had shot some of his peers and his teachers.
The fourth song in my playlist is “When I’m Gone” by Eminem. I chose this song because Nick did whatever he could to protect Valerie even if it meant hurting other people, which he did. Nick had killed all of the people that had bullied, annoyed, or were just very rude to Valerie and him. The tone is in love because Nick loved Valerie so much that he one day he decided it was time for the people that made them miserable to get their revenge, and unfortunately they did.
The fifth song in my playlist is “The Way” by Ariana Grande featuring Mac Miller. I chose this song because both Valerie and Nick loved each other and they always thought about each other, and the way they made each other feel. The tone in this scene is inseparable because in my opinion nothing or no one would be able to separate these two love birds.
The sixth song in my playlist is “Try” by Pink. I chose this song because Valerie misses Nick and she thinks about why he shot all those people, but in the end she knows that she has to try and move on from the life she had with Nick. The tone in this scene is confused because she doesn’t really want to forget all of the, what Valerie calls them, wonderful memories.
The seventh song is my playlist is “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. I chose this song because Valerie thought she was lost without Nick, and once the shooting was done she thought she wasn’t wanted anymore because Nick was the one who always made Valerie feel like she was actually wanted by someone, and that someone was Nick Levil her boyfriend. The tone in this scene is miserable because she thought that without Nick there she would have nobody there to protect her from the bullies, but at the end she because friend with girl that used to torment her at school.
The last song in my playlist for the book I read Hate List is “I won’t give up” by Jason Mraz. I chose this song because even though Valerie knows that Nick is dead she will always have him in her heart, and she will always remember the cherishing moments they spent together, and another reason why I picked this song was because Valerie saved Jessica’s life during the shooting, and I felt like that meant the world to Jessica. So Jessica decided that she wasn’t going to be a jerk to Valerie and decided to become friends with her and not try and be enemies with her anymore. When Jessica told Valerie that she wanted to be friends and not enemies, Valerie was surprised. She asked her why and she said because you saved my life, Valerie was still in the past and she remembered all toughs’ times Jessica spent torturing Valerie, but she came through and said she will give a try. The tone in this scene is forgiveness because when Valerie decided to become friends with Jessica she forgave her and she had let go of the past.

Playlist for Hate List by 530

Hate List is a book about a boy, a girl, and murder, perfect love story right? In this book Valerie is in love with her boyfriend, Nick, but after he starts hanging out with a shady character, he starts to act different. After a trip with hanging out with his “new buddy” he does something horrible, he commits a school shooting. Now Val has to live life like a “normal” student and go back to the same school where the shooting was. I have chosen some songs that I think match this book very well so, I hope you enjoy!
The first song I chose is “Demons” by Imagine Dragons. I chose this song because it describes how through the entire book, Valerie has to deal with her demons and still get through life. The song is called “Demons” for this exact reason; talking about how everyone has demons but everyone still has to get through life and not be afraid of who they are. Even though Valerie had some demons before, she now has more because of Nick.
The second song I chose is “If Everyone Cared” by Nickelback. I chose it because this is the song that the author quotes at the beginning of the book. But not only that, it actually matches the book pretty well. She quoted the part that says “We’ll show the world they were wrong and teach them all to sing along”. I actually really like this quote and song because it’s about acceptance and forgiving.

If this message isn’t already clear enough I will explain it. It is a song talking about things such as “we used to be so close”, “you used to hold me”, “what happened to us”, etc. This matches the book very well because Nick and Val used to be inseparable until he changed. In other words, he “used to hold” her.
The fourth song I chose is “What I’ve Done” by Linkin Park. I chose this song because this reminds me of the look on Nicks face after he shot Valerie. His face was just full of pain and regret. This was the first time she noticed, since the shooting started, that he actually realized that he made a big mistake. He kind of woke up into reality after that. This is a great example of another thing too. They used to call each other Romeo and Juliet and in Romeo and Juliet that Shakespeare wrote. Romeo kills himself because he thinks that Juliet died but she actually didn’t. This is the same thing whereas Nick thinks he kills Val so he kills himself thinking “what have I done” then she ends up being okay.

This song writer did a really good job with the tone because she sounds all peppy and glad but is actually singing about shamefulness and betrayal. I chose it because this describes the scene when Valerie talks about the first time she went to his house and that’s how she always knew him. She didn’t know that this sweet poetic guy could be the cause of the shooting. She thought she knew him. But she was betrayed.
The sixth song I chose is “Just too Close” by Alex Clare. This is a really well matching song will almost all the lyrics. In the song it talks about how he is “too close” to love her and it is similar in the book because she is too close to Nick that when he committed the shooting he did something to hurt her and now she just can’t deal with it any more. She still loves him but the shooting just made it so that loving him is just “too close to home” and it hurt her inside instead of feeling that warm fuzzy feeling of love.

She risked her life to save everyone else but most importantly try to save him. She would do anything for him.

My first song in my playlist is “Alone” by Heart. This song matches the scene in The Forest of Hands and Teeth when Mary is alone in her room longing for Travis. The song fits the scene because the song describes a woman who is longing for someone she loves and she is alone in her room, just like Mary is.
The second song in my playlist is “Neptune the Mystic” by Gustav Holst. This song conveys the atmosphere in the scene where Mary is down in the basement of the abbey. She is in the dark investigating this mysterious room and reading from a large book that she thinks holds many secrets that have been kept from the village. The song fits the scene because it sounds mysterious, (hence the name) and it gives a kind of deep dark feeling.
The third song in my playlist is “The Essence of Metroid boss theme” featured in the game Metroid Prime. I think this song captures the intensity and panic of the zombie siege. The town is being flooded with zombies and people are running for cover. This song is a perfect match because it fits the pandemonium that is taking place. It gives a creepy feel to the scene. You can tell that the song is evil sounding.
The fourth song in my playlist is “Ash” by Secession. This song fits the scene in the book when Mary and the group stumble out upon the abandoned village. Suddenly zombies start pouring forth from the buildings and they quickly are surrounded. They scramble to find refuge. This song conveys the mysteriousness of the abandoned village. It conveys the epic circumstances that they are in. It makes the scene like it’s happening in slow motion. You can really picture the scene.
The fifth song in my playlist is “The Twilight Zone Theme” from the show, The Twilight Zone. This song fits the scene when Travis is climbing across the rope to the tree platforms. The rope is unraveling and zombies almost reach him from the ground. It is a very suspenseful scene and this song fits it well. The song has a suspenseful and scary sound that will put you at the edge of your seat just like the scene of the book.
The sixth song in my playlist is “Sad Violin” by Thao Nguyen Xanh. This song conveys the sad scene where Travis turns and becomes a zombie. Mary picks up the scythe herself and decapitates him with one blow. She immediately starts to sob and I think that this song captures the tragedy and loss that Mary is experiencing.
The seventh song in my playlist is “Requiem for a Dream” (The Lord of the Rings Two Towers trailer remix). This song fits the scene when Mary makes a break for it through the first gate. She doesn’t go very far before her brother Jed comes and saves her. They continue to run but get surrounded by a horde of zombies. This song matches the desperation of Mary as she struggles to fend of the never-ending flow of zombies assaulting her.
The eighth and final song in my playlist is “Into the West” by Annie Lennox. This song matches the scene in the book when Mary wakes up and is on the shore of the ocean. She has finally made it through the forest and is safe. Her childhood dream has been fulfilled and she knows she kept her promise to Travis that she would taste the salt of the ocean.

The two fit together because the scene and the song both have the tone of sadness stemming from a certain girl.
The second song on my playlist is “Kurai Mori no SAAKASU” (“Dark Woods Circus”) by Hatsune Miku (along with other Vocaloids). The scene(s) that this song matches/are the scene(s) in-which the group (consisting of Mary, Trevor, Cass, Harry, Jed, Beth, Jacob, and Argos) are wandering the forest. The two fit together because the scene(s) are dark and dreary, just like the song is.

This song matches the scene in-which Cass was having a moment of insanity when the group stumbled upon a dead-end when wandering in the forest. The two fit together because the scene’s tone is “insanity” and the song is basically about insanity.

This song matches the scene in-which Travis is about ready to die and return after being bitten by an Unconsecrated and Mary is spending her last moments with him. When Mary is told by her brother Jed she will join the Sisterhood, I feel this song describes the scene well, due to the harsh feelings behind the lyrics, and how Mary is feeling towards her brother at that moment. I also feel like it captures the bitter tone to the scene.

I chose the song “God Help the Outcasts” by Esmeralda for an overall song of the whole book because this book is about an outcast that had a boyfriend that killed a lot of people in their school, Garvin High, because they were on what they called, the Hate List.

I also chose the song “Battlefield” by Jordan Sparks because the lyrics in this song talk about hardships in love between a girl and a boy, and there is a hardship in the book between a girl, Valerie Leftman, and a boy, Nick Levil, which is that Nick shot people that were on the Hate List.

This song matches the scene in Goal by Robert Rigby when Hughie Magowan slide tackled Santiago , then Santiago gets mad and is about to punch Hughie , but then one of his teammates say to forget because it’s not worth it. Two fit together because the tone expresses with the scene.
The second song in my playlist is “Golden Slumbers” by The Beatles. This song matches the scene when Santiago misses his home back in L.A. The two fit together because the lyrics in the beginning express how much Santiago is homesick and the intro is an emotional part.

This song fits because his mother is very disappointed in him, and the song has a sad feel to it.
The third song is “Supremacy” by Muse. This song matches the scene where Teddy is scheming how to hack into CLETS. This song fits the scene because it has a sort of spy/James Bond sound. Teddy is doing a covert mission that is very important, and this song has a mood that fits this.
The fourth song is “Broken Jaw” by Foster the People. This song, again, has the right mood for the scene where Teddy is walking through the Jail. This song has a mood that fits the kind of defeated feeling Teddy has when he’s arrested.
The fifth song is “The Phoenix” by Fallout Boy. This song goes well with the scene where Teddy and Andre get into a fight. The song has an angry, mad sound to it that really goes with the mood of the scene. Teddy and Andre are both extremely mad at each other.

This song fits the scene where Teddy first meats Micah, because like the song, Micah doesn’t care what people think about him. He just goes off and does whatever he wants.

She acts very depressed and is extremely sad. This song is about trying to get over someone that means a lot to you, and that’s what Teddy’s mom is trying to do with Tina. But she can’t and so she is just really sad throughout most of the rest of the book.

This song fits the scene where Teddy comes home from jail, but more specifically when his mom looks at him, says nothing, and walks into her bedroom closing the door. This song fits because his mother is very disappointed in him, and the song has a sad feel to it.
The third song is “Supremacy” by Muse. This song matches the scene where Teddy is scheming how to hack into CLETS. This song fits the scene because it has a sort of spy/James Bond sound. Teddy is doing a covert mission that is very important, and this song has a mood that fits this.
The fourth song is “Broken Jaw” by Foster the People. This song, again, has the right mood for the scene where Teddy is walking through the Jail. This song has a mood that fits the kind of defeated feeling Teddy has when he’s arrested.
The fifth song is “The Phoenix” by Fallout Boy. This song goes well with the scene where Teddy and Andre get into a fight. The song has an angry, mad sound to it that really goes with the mood of the scene. Teddy and Andre are both extremely mad at each other.
The sixth song is “McFearless” by Kings of Leon. This song’s lyrics sort of tell about a guy who doesn’t really care about what people think of him. This song fits the scene where Teddy first meats Micah, because like the song, Micah doesn’t care what people think about him. He just goes off and does whatever he wants.
The seventh song is “Drink You Away” by Justin Timberlake. I chose this song because it reminds me of how Teddy’s mom acts throughout most of the book after Tina dies. She acts very depressed and is extremely sad. This song is about trying to get over someone that means a lot to you, and that’s what Teddy’s mom is trying to do with Tina. But she can’t and so she is just really sad throughout most of the rest of the book.
The eighth song is "Broken Crown" by Mumford and Sons. This song goes with the scene where Teddy’s father first picks him up from Officer Diaz. The song has a mood that makes you think kind of a rainy, sad day. And in the scene it’s raining. It is an intense scene with a lot of emotion, and the song itself has a lot of emotion as well.

The first song in my playlist is “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance. This song matches the scene in Blood Wounds by Susan Beth Pfeffer, when Willa is in her father’s house and Trace breaks in. They fit because the song explains how “Teenagers scare the living s***” out of this person, and in the book, Trace and Willa got really scared when Trace broke in. The song also goes into detail about how complicated a teenager’s life can be and Willa’s life seems to be very difficult.
The second song I chose was “Home” by Phillip Phillips. This song matches the book because Willa’s mom left her dad when Willa was young. She married a man named Jack who is trying to “make that place her home.” The song also has a happy mood and tone which matches how hard Jack is trying for all of them to be a happy family.
The third song I chose was “Little Talks” by Of Monsters And Men. This song matches the book because in the song it says, “Don’t listen to a word I say, the screams all sound the same.” This explains how Willa is feeling, because she’s not really paying attention to anything around her. Also, a lot of people are being rude about her dad, when she goes to Pryor for a funeral, and she tries to just ignore what they say.

I choose “Some Nights” by fun. because it explains in the lyrics that “some nights I stay up casting in my bad luck.” And that is how I imagine Tris’ night went. On page 36 and 37 I could imagine how hard it was to sleep that night. How confused she was of her brother actually thinking of himself. This was the night before she and the other 16 year olds chose a faction.
I chose “Too Close” by Alex Clare because I felt like the song represents her going with her gut feeling with the situation she was in. That is why I chose “Too Close”. This part In Divergent on page 47 was about the choosing ceremony. When she feels like she has to stay because her brother chose another faction. This is the part where when she sliced her hand with the knife her hand quickly moved from the middle to the Dauntless side.
I chose “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day to represent the part in Divergent where she / Tris is walking home from school after the test before the factionless man asks if she had something to eat. On page 24 and 25 when she is explaining what it is like living factionless. Her mom says it’s worse than death. I believe “Boulevard of broken dreams” represents that part because in the song and book it explains that this is where people lost / broke their dreams.
I chose America beauty movie theme because the relationships between the song and the part of the book was the rhythm. The part in the book was pages 52-53 , it was riding the train before she jumps off. It’s like she wasn’t even thinking about why they were on the train or how they were getting off. She was thinking about who was going to set the dinner table that night and how her mother and father felt about the situation. In the real world you would think it’s going fast because the train is going fast but it’s not, it’s all going slow in her head. Like she’s in another world. That was how the train ride was for her, a melody.
I chose The middle by Jimmy Eat the World because of its relationship to the book. That relationship would be that the song lyrics go perfectly to what I think she is feeling in that part. At first she’s intrigued but then the real “dauntless” go in a different direction than the nine intense. Only nine of were not born dauntless. She was the only Abnegation transfer there. It seems that Four didn’t appreciate being laughed at. So she feels like she needed to be careful around him, it seemed almost wary now to her.

The beat of the music in the beginning is really suspenseful like the scene in the book, just when the beat drops she jumps. I feel that the suspense in the song just makes the scene.
My third song for this playlist is called “Ms. Jackson” by Panic at the Disco. This song matches the scene when Beatrice does her first fight with Peter. The song has a quick beat and it’s very simple, like the fight. Since it’s just a couple punches and she gets knocked cold.
The fourth song I chose for this playlist is called “Come Together” by The Beatles. This song goes with the scene when the teams are playing capture the flag. The rhythm sounds a bit sneaky and sly. The song paints a picture in your mind as the creep up to the flag.

The scene when Beatrice shows up as the new girl in Dawntless and the Dawntless members don’t welcome her in any way and they treat her like she doesn’t belong. The second song in my playlist is “I miss you” by Miley Cyrus. This song matches Garrets relationship with Sabrina in the book Boot Camp. Even though she doesn’t know there Garret is, he doesn’t know if she’s thinking about him, but he is always thinking about Sabrina. Thinking about what she is doing, how she is doing, if she still cares, and if she misses him like he misses her.

Sarah Sunwald, a spunky girl who has spent the past two years of her life in Lake Harmony. She is a fighter, strong willed, and not ready to give up her hope of being free. She takes abuse not just by the camp itself but by the feeling of emptiness and fear. She hopes for hope. She believes that one day she will be free, she has to.

The fifth song in my playlist is “See You When I See You” by Jason Aldean. This song matches the scene in Boot Camp where Garret is saying goodbye to Sarah. The whole scene is cold. I feel like the song perfectly captures how Sarah feels as the words “goodbye” fall from her lips, and when she kisses Garret farewell, you can feel that it won’t be forever.
The sixth song in my playlist is “Burn” by Papa Roach. This song fits Sarah, Pauly, and Garret’s feelings toward Lake Harmony in the book Boot Camp. It says “you’re gonna get what you deserve I wanna watch you burn,” I feel like this describes how they felt while burning down the camp.

Creating a Playlist for Your Novel
Here's a model, or at least my practicing-what-I-preach, when it comes to the Creating a Playlist for Your Novel assignment.

Part of my educational/professional philosophy dictates that I should not assign students to do any work I wouldn't be willing to do myself. My students are working on a Literature Circle project in which they read novels in small groups and discuss them, but one of their individual tasks while reading is to think about the songs they would choose if they were creating a soundtrack for the novel. This is a good reading exercise since it forces students to think about both the content and the tone of the passages they are reading. I think it would also be useful for writers, though I didn't try it when I wrote The Sum of Our Gods. I did frequently listen to music as a wrote, but I find I choose songs that easily fade into the background, songs I've listened to for longer than my students have been alive and which no longer require my conscious attention. Now that the novel is completed and about to be available for sale, I thought it might be fun for some readers to hear what I would have liked to attach to each chapter of the novel. I'd also be interested to hear what readers think of these, and what songs they would prefer to connect to their experience of the story. I can't write my full explanations for each choice, as I've assigned my students to, because that might produce some spoilers for the novel, so interested readers will just have to check back here after each chapter and see if these selections make sense to them. If that sounds like homework to you, you are excused from the assignment, but if you enjoy music and literature, I thought this might be a fun way to join these together. Enjoy!

Part of my educational/professional philosophy dictates that I should not assign students to do any work I wouldn't be willing to do myself. My students are working on a Literature Circle project in which they read novels in small groups and discuss them, but one of their individual tasks while reading is to think about the songs they would choose if they were creating a soundtrack for the novel. This is a good reading exercise since it forces students to think about both the content and the tone of the passages they are reading. I think it would also be useful for writers, though I didn't try it when I wrote The Sum of Our Gods. I did frequently listen to music as a wrote, but I find I choose songs that easily fade into the background, songs I've listened to for longer than my students have been alive and which no longer require my conscious attention. Now that the novel is completed and about to be available for sale, I thought it might be fun for some readers to hear what I would have liked to attach to each chapter of the novel. I'd also be interested to hear what readers think of these, and what songs they would prefer to connect to their experience of the story. I can't write my full explanations for each choice, as I've assigned my students to, because that might produce some spoilers for the novel, so interested readers will just have to check back here after each chapter and see if these selections make sense to them. If that sounds like homework to you, you are excused from the assignment, but if you enjoy music and literature, I thought this might be a fun way to join these together. Enjoy!
