A Playlist for Hate List by Julia

by Julia

The first song I chose for this playlist is “Ours” by Taylor Swift. This song basically is saying that no matter what people think this love is theirs. This relates to the book because when Valerie and Nick were dating Valerie’s mom didn’t approve of it even though Valerie and Nick were perfectly happy together. In the song “Ours” she says: “Seems like there's always someone who disapproves. They'll judge it like they know about me and you”, I think this explains how her and Nick feel.

The next song I thought would work for this playlist is “Pumped up Kicks” by Foster the People. This song works because he says that the people he doesn’t like better watch out since he has a gun. They basically say this in the book because Nick and Valerie didn’t like people so they decided to start a hate list. Later Nick ended up shooting people off of that list. The song says that the “cool” kids had better watch out. Most of the people on Nick and Valerie’s list were the “cool” kids. This song is about a kid who has thoughts killing people which Nick has had thoughts about that before.

“Let me be Myself” by 3 Doors Down is the third song I chose for this book. In the Hate List Valerie is being judged for who she is and who she hangs out with. She is judged by the “popular” crowd and these are the people who bully her. They can’t accept that she is who she is so they bully her. This song says, “But tell me please, would you one time just let me be myself? So I can shine with my own light, let me be myself. Would you let me be myself?” This is the chorus of the song and I think it really represents what Valerie is going through.

My forth song I chose for this playlist is called “How to Save a Life” by The Fray. I chose this song because in the chorus it says, “Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness. And I would have stayed up with you all night. Had I known how to save a life”, I thought that Valerie felt this way when she was in the hospital and was fully aware of what had happened with the shooting and Nick. There was regret that she had that maybe if she had paid more attention to the signs he was sending she might have been able to save not only his life but the lives of others too.

“Innocent” by Taylor Swift is the next song I chose for this playlist. I chose this song because it uses a lot of minor chords which makes it sound sort of sad and in a way, scary. A scene where this song could work in is where Jessica wants to give Valerie a second chance. Jessica really wants to be friends with Valerie and she knows she didn’t have anything to do with the shooting and that she wasn’t guilty. In this song it says “..Who you are is not where you’ve been, your still an innocent...” The song is about second chances.

This song, “Cry” by Alexx Calise is another song I chose for the playlist. It is about someone who is basically at the breaking point and, as it says in the song, this person doesn’t want to do anything but cry. There is a point in the book after Valerie realized everything that happened and is going back to school for the first time and to her it seems like her world is crashing down. Her boyfriend was gone, he killed many people and severely injured others and everyone thinks that Valerie was part of the cause. Valerie feels like everyone hates her and she just wants to cry.

The seventh song I chose is “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift. This song is about missing someone and remembering all of the fun times you used to have. Valerie and Nick were really happy. There are times in the book where Valerie is thinking back to her and Nick. She misses how much fun they used to have together. This song says “…I remember it all too well...” and “Cause there we are again when I loved you so…. It was rare I was there I remember it all too well…” This is really how Valerie feels when she misses Nick. She feels like she lost everything when he killed himself.

“Forever Love (Digame)” by Anna Nalick is the last song on my playlist for the Hate List. This song is very pretty. It says, “Make me think that maybe heavens where you are. God don’t send to me your angels. I just wanna hear you say again, Forever love” This relates to the book in the end when Valerie still misses Nick but she has gotten over it a little bit. She has moved on with her life even though she still really does miss him. Valerie wishes though that he was still with her and wishes she could see him again.
